Winter Shipping Explained: Ensuring Safe Delivery of Your Feeder Insects During Cold Months

Why Winter Shipping is Essential
During winter, special precautions are necessary to prevent feeder insects from freezing during transit. Unlike humans, insects are cold-blooded creatures and cannot generate their own body heat. They rely entirely on their surrounding environment for warmth. When temperatures drop below 0°C, insects are at risk of freezing. To address this, we employ specialized winter packaging to keep the transport box insulated and the insects safe.

How Winter Shipping Works
We utilize a specially designed thermal packaging system that combines insulation with heating. This includes a multi-layered cardboard box and custom-fit Styrofoam inserts (20 mm thick), which ensure optimal insulation. For warmth, we include a 72-hour heat pack—a heating element that activates upon exposure to air, generating heat for up to 72 hours. The number of heat packs included depends on the outside temperature and the chosen delivery method, ensuring adequate protection.

When to Opt for Winter Shipping
We recommend winter packaging from November through April. It becomes essential when daytime temperatures consistently drop below 5°C and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing.

Cost of Winter Shipping
Our customers can purchase the thermal winter packaging for €2.99 per winter pack, which includes 0-2 heat packs as required.

Special Notes on Winter Shipping
Sometimes, insects may appear inactive or lifeless upon arrival during winter due to a natural survival mechanism called cold torpor. When temperatures fall below 3°C, insects enter this state, allowing them to endure even short-term exposure to temperatures as low as -10°C.

What to Do If Your Insects Arrive Inactive

Unpack Immediately: Carefully remove the insects from their transport box as soon as possible.
Provide Warmth: Place the insects in a room with a stable temperature of 20-25°C. Avoid exposing them to sudden heat sources, such as heaters or direct sunlight, as this can cause stress.
Wait Patiently: Allow the insects time to recover naturally. Most will regain activity within a few hours once they warm up.
Check Conditions: If the insects do not recover after 24 hours at room temperature, please contact us for further assistance.
Using our winter shipping solutions ensures your feeder insects arrive in excellent condition despite the challenges of the cold season. With proper care upon arrival, you can help them recover and thrive!
